How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance typically covers preventive and restorative services. When looking at your plan, you will find there are different coverage levels based on the type of treatment you receive.

While no two policies or plans are the same, the general breakdown of benefits is a 100-80-50 structure. This means that:

  • 80-100% of preventive services are covered (i.e., dental exams, cleanings, X-rays, etc.)
  • 70-80% of minor restorative services are covered (i.e., dental fillings, root canals, etc.)
  • 50% of major restorative services are covered (i.e., dentures, dental crowns, etc.)

Orthodontia may or may not be covered, so if you have someone in your family who may require braces at some point, it will be helpful to purchase a supplemental plan if your existing one does not include orthodontics as part of its benefits.

Also, cosmetic dentistry is unlikely to be covered; however, certain exceptions can apply.

What is the Difference Between Dental and Medical Insurance?

Medical insurance is designed to be a more reactionary form of financial security. If you become sick or injured and need hospitalization, if you require lab testing or if you are pregnant, for example, you will find that your policy offers greater coverage for situations that have already occurred. A typical wellness visit is unlikely to save you much money.

Dental insurance, however, is different. These companies build their benefits in a way that encourages you to seek preventive care. They do not want to pay for more extensive and invasive treatments, so making sure you pay less for regular dental checkups and cleanings, X-rays, fluoride treatment and more is what you can expect.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

In-network and out-of-network are the two columns you can expect to see when reviewing your dental insurance plan. Whether your dentist is in-network or out-of-network, our Miles of Smiles team will help you better understand your cost and how you can get the most out of your benefits.

In-Network Coverage

Choosing an in-network dentist will ensure that you save more when receiving preventive and restorative dental services. The reason is that our contractual agreements with various insurance companies allow us to provide certain services at a lower rate.

Some of the insurance plans we are in-network with include:

  • Careington
  • Delta Dental Premier NH
  • Delta Dental PPO NH
  • NH Medicaid
  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • Guardian
  • United Healthcare
  • And more!

Out of Network

If we are considered out-of-network with your dental insurance plan, do not worry. Although you will be expected to pay for treatment on the day services are rendered, our team will still aim to provide the highest level of quality oral healthcare while finding ways to maximize your reimbursement.
